Whitley Muslim Education Trust

est.
2005
WMET came about during 2005 and registered as a charity in 13th October 2008 as a wish of a few locals who lived in South Reading, Initially, providing access to facillities locally, in order to hold Tarawi during Ramzan and Friday prayers. For the next few years these prayers were held at 47th St Pauls Scouts and South Reading Community Centre. This then resulted in the formation of an ad hoc committee with the aim, to do a survey to assess how many Muslims lived in the South Reading area.
This survey revealed over 330 households living in the area with an estimated population of over a 1000, which was almost the same as East and West Reading Muslim population. The survey highlighted the lack of provision in facilities and services for muslims in South Reading. This committee realising the gap, then started the work on writing and agreeing a constitution with a view to become a registered charity.
A constitution was adopted on 15th Sept with a sum of £2000 raised for the Trust. The group then registered as a charity on 13th October 2008 of the same year.
